Abstract The objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of three dehydration/rehydration cycles on the vegetative growth and shoot dry matter of citrus seedlings, as well as seedling acclimatization to this environmental stress. The five following water regimes were evaluated: WR1 (control), WR2, and WR3, with plants kept at 100, 75, and 50% of pot capacity during the three cycles, respectively; and WR4 and WR5, with plants kept at 75, 100, and 75% and 50, 100, and 50% of pot capacity during the first, second, and third cycles, respectively. Relative water content, plant height, length and diameter of the main and secondary branches, angle of leaf insertion in the branch, specific leaf area, leaf chlorophyll content, and dry matter were evaluated. Rehydration after a cycle with 50% of pot capacity did not improve plant growth or dry matter accumulation in relation to the well-hydrated plants of the control. However, after a cycle with 75% of pot capacity, rehydration restores water content, the diameter of the secondary branches, and the angle of leaf insertion. The exposure to successive events of dehydration/rehydration makes the citrus seedlings more resistant to future exposures to water stress.

Resumo O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o efeito de três ciclos consecutivos de desidratação/reidratação no crescimento vegetativo e na matéria seca de mudas de citros, bem como a aclimatação dessas mudas a esse estresse ambiental. Foram avaliados os seguintes cinco regimes hídricos: WR1 (controle), WR2 e WR3, com plantas mantidas em 100, 75 e 50% da capacidade de vaso durante os três ciclos, respectivamente; e WR4 e WR5, com plantas mantidas em 75, 100 e 75% e 50, 100 e 50% da capacidade de vaso durante o primeiro, o segundo e o terceiro ciclo, respectivamente. Foram avaliados teor relativo de água, altura da planta, comprimento e diâmetro dos ramos principal e secundário, ângulo de inserção da folha no ramo, área foliar específica, teor de clorofila foliar e matéria seca. A reidratação após um ciclo com 50% da capacidade do vaso não aumentou o crescimento nem o acúmulo de matéria seca das plantas, em comparação às plantas bem hidratadas do controle. Porém, após um ciclo com 75% da capacidade do vaso, a reidratação repôs o teor de água, o diâmetro dos ramos secundários e o ângulo de inserção das folhas. A exposição a sucessivos eventos de desidratação/reidratação torna as mudas de citros mais resistentes a futuras exposições ao estresse hídrico.

ABSTRACT Salinity is recognized as one of the main abiotic stresses, causing declines in the productivity of many crops, such as rice. Considering the importance of rice as a staple food crop, the generalized pattern of salinization in soils around the globe and the sensitivity of the crop to saline soils, the aim of this study was to evaluate the sensitivity / tolerance of upland rice lines. The upland rice lines used in this work were obtained from the Genetic Improvement Program of the Universidade Federal de Lavras. The experiment was carried out in a greenhouse, with a block design and factorial scheme, with 10 lines and four NaCl treatments (0, 3, 15 and 45 mmol·L-1) on the substrate. Parameters related to the emergence rate, seedling survival rate, growth and architecture, biomass allocation, gas exchange and productivity were evaluated. Salinity levels influenced the emergence and survival rates, especially at the highest levels of NaCl, with lines L1, L4 and L5 showing survival below 60%. These lines were excluded from the experiment, and the other seven lines were carried out until the end of the crop cycle. Grain weight per plant (GWP) was used as an indicator of greater tolerance to salinity, and lines L6, L7 and L8 showed outstanding performance under treatments with increased NaCl. L6 had the highest GWP, while L7 and L8 had less pronounced decreases with increasing NaCl doses. These three lines may be recommended for further studies about the impacts of NaCl on rice production.

RESUMEN Las características de la anatomía de la hoja proporcionan evidencias importantes sobre la transición entre las vías C3 y C4. La fotosíntesis C4 surgió para reducir la tasa de fotorrespiración C3, concentrando el CO2 alrededor del sitio de la Rubisco y utilizando estructuras y maquinaria ya presentes en las plantas C3. En monocotiledóneas, se observa un alto número de linajes C4, la mayoría de ellas filogenéticamente relacionadas con grupos C3. El género C3 Apochloa, que pertenece a la subtribu Arthropogoninae, está relacionado con dos géneros C4 Coleataenia and Cyphonanthus. En este contexto, el objetivo fue evaluar cuatro especies de Apochloa para establecer las características anatómicas relacionadas con la evolución de la via C4 en este grupo. Se colectaron hojas completamente expandidas de A. euprepes, A. lorea, A. molinioides y A. poliophylla y se determinaron las características de las células del mesófilo (M) y del haz de la vaina (HV) a partir de secciones transversales de la hoja. Las especies presentaron una anatomía rústica de Kranz con células HV agrandadas y de distribución radial, con pocas organelas organizadas en posición centrífuga. Aunque las modificaciones de las células HV están probablemente relacionadas con el mantenimiento del estado hídrico de la planta, se puede inferir que facilitan el establecimiento de la fotosíntesis en los géneros C4 relacionados.

ABSTRACT Leaf anatomy characteristics provide important evidences about the transition between C3 and C4 pathways. The C4 photosynthesis pathway allowed to reduce the C3 photorespiratory rate, concentrating CO2 around the Rubisco site and using structures and machinery already presented in C3 plants. In monocots, it is observed a high number of C4 lineages, most of them phylogenetically related to C3 groups. The genus Apochloa (C3), subtribe Arthropogoninae, is related to two C4 genera Coleataenia and Cyphonanthus. The aim of this study was to evaluate four Apochloa species in order to establish anatomical characteristics related to the evolution of C4 pathway in this group. By means of transverse sections fully expanded leaves of A. euprepes, A. lorea, A. molinioides, and A. poliophylla were collected and the characteristics of the mesophyll (M) and bundle sheath (BS) cells were determined. These species showed a rustic Kranz anatomy with enlarged and radial arranged BS cells, which have few organelles organized in a centrifugal position. Although the modifications of BS cells are probably related to the maintenance of plant water status, we also discuss the evolution for the establishment of C4 photosynthesis in the related C4 genera.

RESUMO Cercosporiose é uma das principais doenças que comprometem o crescimento de mudas de café por causar desfolha e redução no crescimento. A doença apresenta maior severidade quando o cafeeiro está submetido ao déficit hídrico. O uso de irrigação é uma alternativa para minimizar os danos causados pela doença. Objetivou-se neste trabalho avaliar o impacto da doença na fisiologia do cafeeiro em função da redução da lâmina de irrigação. As plantas foram submetidas a três lâminas de irrigação (0.1, 0.6 e 1.2 mm.dia-1); inoculadas e não inoculadas com C. coffeicola, em delineamento inteiramente casualizado com 35 repetições, totalizando 210 unidades experimentais. As mudas de cafeeiro com cercosporiose apresentaram reduções no potencial hídrico mínimo e na fotossíntese em função da lâmina de irrigação, com excessão da lâmina de irrigação com 0,6 mm.dia-1. A atividade do sistema antioxidante foi superior nas mudas doentes apenas na maior irrigação. Os resultados comprovaram que a presença da doença incrementou o estresse hídrico nas mudas de café por reduzir o potencial hídrico e uso eficiente de água.

ABSTRACT Abstract: Brown eye spot is one of the major diseases that affect coffee seedling growth for causing defoliation and reducing the plant growth. The disease severity is higher when the coffee plant is subjected to water deficit. Using irrigation is an alternative to minimize the damage caused by this disease. The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of this disease on the physiology of coffee plants as a function of the reduction in the irrigation level. The plants were subjected to three irrigation levels (0.1, 0.6 and 1.2 mm.day-1), inoculated and not inoculated with Cercospora coffeicola, in a completely randomized design with 35 replicates, totaling 210 experimental units. Coffee seedlings showing brown eye spot presented reductions in the minimum water potential and in photosynthesis as a function of the lower irrigation level, except for the irrigation level 0.6 mm.day-1. The activity of the antioxidant system in diseased seedlings was only higher under higher irrigation levels. Results proved that the presence of the disease increased water stress in coffee seedlings for reducing both water potential and efficient water use.

ABSTRACT The heterogeneous light pattern in forest environments leads to specific morphological and physiological responses. However, anthropogenic pressures in areas such as Atlantic Forest and Cerrado are modifying the light availability, and consequently the forest community composition. The aim of this study was to investigate the plasticity of forest species Pimenta pseudocaryophyllus under full sunlight and shade conditions. P. pseudocaryophyllus showed typical shade plant phenotype, with higher net photosynthesis, transpiration, and chlorophyll a and b contents when cultivated under this condition. The decrease in net photosynthesis under full sunlight conditions is probably related to PSII photoinhibition. In addition, under full sunlight, reduced height, number of leaves, and specific leaf area was observed, while plants in shade increased these characteristics. P. pseudocaryophyllus did not show high morphological and physiological plasticity, which may be a maladaptive response. It was concluded that forest disturbances could compromise the occurrence and survival of P. pseudocaryophyllus.

RESUMO. O pessegueiro (Prunus persica) é uma frutífera de clima temperado e necessita de frio durante o repouso hibernal para superar a dormência, entretanto, atualmente é cultivado em regiões subtropicais e tropicais, onde há menor ocorrência de frio durante essa fase fenológica. Este trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar a adaptabilidade e a estabilidade das fases vegetativa e reprodutiva de cultivares de pessegueiro em clima subtropical avaliando os estádios de brotação e floração. O delineamento utilizado foi em blocos casualizados com quatro repetições e quatro ramos por repetição, em esquema de parcelas subdivididas no tempo, no qual as parcelas representam o tempo (2 ciclos produtivos) e as subparcelas as cultivares (23). Foram avaliados a duração da brotação (DB) e floração (DF), o tempo médio de brotação (ATB) e floração (ATF), a quantidade de gemas vegetativas brotadas (RRB) e floríferas brotadas (RRF), a formação de ramos (SF) e frutificação efetiva (FS) e o número de horas com temperatura abaixo de 7,2ºC e 12ºC, e acima de 20ºC durante o período experimental. As cultivares ‘Bonão’, ‘Ouromel-4’, ‘Libra’ e ‘Maciel’ apresentam maior adaptabilidade e estabilidade da fase vegetativa e ‘Ouromel-4’ e ‘Libra’ apresentam maior adaptabilidade e estabilidade da fase reprodutiva de pessegueiro sob clima subtropical.

ABSTRACT. The peach tree (Prunus persica) is a fruit species native to temperate climates that requires a chill during its hibernal period to overcome dormancy. However, due to genetic breeding, varieties are currently grown in subtropical and tropical regions where there are low occurrences of chill during this phenological stage. This study evaluated the adaptability and stability of the reproductive and vegetative phases of peach tree cultivars in a subtropical climate. An experiment was designed in randomized blocks with split time plots, with 23 peach tree cultivars and four replications, with each replication consisting of one plant and four shoots. The years of evaluated (plots) and the cultivars (subplots) were considered to be treatments. The relative rates of budburst (RRB), flowering (RRF), shoot formation (SF) and fruit set (FS), average time of budburst (ATB) and flowering (ATF), duration of budburst (DB) and flowering (DF) and number of hours with temperatures below 7.20°C were evaluated during the experimental period. The cultivars ‘Bonão’, ‘Ouromel-4’, ‘Libra’ and ‘Maciel’ demonstrated greater adaptability during the vegetative phase, whereas‘Ouromel-4’ and ‘Libra’ demonstrated greater adaptability and stability during the reproductive phase of peach trees in a subtropical climate.

RESUMO Folhas e cascas do caule de Stryphnodendron adstringens, uma espécie do Cerrado brasileiro, foram utilizadas para examinar os padrões sazonais da atividade da fenilalanina amônia-liase e os teores de fenóis e taninos totais em 16 indivíduos adultos, em condições de campo. Avaliações das trocas gasosas, incluindo fotossíntese líquida, transpiração, condutância estomática, densidade de fluxo de fótons fotossinteticamente ativos, temperatura da folha, deficit de pressão de vapor e potencial hídrico foliar foram realizadas. Os resultados foram submetidos à análise de componentes principais. A condutância estomática, fotossíntese líquida, transpiração, eficiência do uso da água, potencial hídrico mínimo e densidade de fluxo de fótons fotossinteticamente ativos foram maiores na estação chuvosa, enquanto que o potencial hídrico máximo e o deficit de pressão de vapor na atmosfera foram semelhantes entre as estações. As variações sazonais nas características de trocas gasosas foram influenciadas por mudanças nas condições climáticas e se correlacionaram positivamente com as maiores temperaturas, precipitação e umidade relativa do ar e negativamente com o aumento da insolação. Não houve correlação entre o potencial hídrico foliar máximo e as demais variáveis climáticas. A atividade da fenilalanina amônia-liase foi semelhante nas estações seca e chuvosa e os maiores teores de fenóis e taninos totais foram observados nas estações seca e chuvosa, respectivamente. A atividade da fenilalanina amônia-liase e os teores de fenóis totais foram influenciados negativamente pela temperatura e precipitação na estação seca, e os teores de taninos totais foram correlacionados principalmente com temperaturas mais elevadas, com menor influência da precipitação na estação chuvosa.

ABSTRACT There were performed analyses of the leaves and stem bark of Stryphnodendron adstringens, a Brazilian Cerrado plant, to examine the seasonal patterns of phenylalanine ammonia-lyase activity and total phenol and tannin contents in 16 adult individuals under field conditions. The measurements of gas exchange parameters, including net photosynthesis, transpiration and stomatal conductance, as well as the photosynthetic photon flux density, leaf temperature, vapor pressure deficit and leaf water potential were also performed. The results were subjected to a principal component analysis. The values obtained for stomatal conductance, net photosynthesis, transpiration, water use efficiency, minimum water potential and photosynthetic photon flux density were higher in the rainy season, while the maximum water potential and vapor pressure deficit in the atmosphere were similar between seasons. The seasonal variations in gas exchange characteristics were influenced by changing weather conditions and were positively correlated with higher air temperatures, rainfall amounts and relative air humidity and negatively correlated with increased insolation. There was no correlation between the maximum leaf water potential and any of the weather variables. Phenylalanine ammonia-lyase activity was similar in the dry and rainy seasons, and higher levels of total phenols and tannins were observed in the dry and rainy seasons, respectively. Phenylalanine ammonia-lyase activity and total phenol contents were negatively influenced by temperature and rainfall in the dry season, and the total tannin contents were mainly correlated with higher temperatures and a lower influence of rainfall in the rainy season.

RESUMO O bastão-do-imperador (Etlingera elatior Jack Smith RM) pode ser propagado in vitro, mas não há informações sobre as fases de aclimatização e adaptação no campo. O objetivo foi estudar as respostas de crescimento e sobrevivência durante a aclimatização ex vitro da espécie, quando mantida em diferentes substratos: Plantmax florestal(r); areia; Plantmax florestal(r) e areia 1:1; e malhas de sombreamento a 50% na cor vermelha; azul e controle sem a presença de malha, assim como estudar respostas fotossintéticas durante a aclimatização em casa de vegetação. A maior taxa de sobrevivência das plantas, número de folhas e número de brotos por planta, foram observados no tratamento com substrato tipo Plantmax florestal(r) puro, na ausência de sombreamento. Quanto à taxa de fotossíntese líquida, eficiência de carboxilação, condutância estomática e taxa de transpiração, plantas de cultivo in vitro apresentaram comportamento semelhante ou superior quando comparadas com plantas controle obtidas a partir de rizomas. Em geral, a eficiência do funcionamento bioquímico e do fotossistema II foram semelhantes em plantas de cultivo in vitro e controle. Conclui-se que tais resultados mostram que as plantas derivadas do cultivo in vitro apresentam rendimento fisiológico satisfatório, conferindo capacidade de aclimatação no campo.

ABSTRACT Torch ginger (Etlingera elatior (Jack) RM Smith) can be propagated in vitro, but there is currently little information about the stages of acclimatization and adaptation for torch ginger in a greenhouse. The objective was to study the growth responses, survival and photosynthetic response during the acclimatization of plants maintained on three different substrates (Plantmax forestry(r), sand and 1:1 Plantmax forestry(r) and sand) under three shading conditions (50% red and blue shading nets and control without shading nets). The highest leaf and shoot numbers per plant and survival rate were observed in treatments with the Plantmax forestry(r) type substrate in the absence of shading. In vitro culture plants behaved similarly or better than rhizome propagated control plants with regard to the net photosynthesis rate, carboxylation efficiency, stomatal conductance and transpiration rate. In general, for both conditions, in vitro and control plants had similar efficiency of biochemical functions and of photosystem II. These results show that plants derived from in vitro culture exhibit satisfactory physiological yield and greenhouse acclimation capacity.

Este trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar o efeito de diferentes tipos de telas de sombreamento utilizadas como subcobertura no cultivo hidropônico de alface. Para isso, foi conduzido um experimento em estufas cobertas com filme plástico de 150µm com três tipos de subcobertura: tela termorrefletora, preta, vermelha e um ambiente controle sem o uso de tela. Para avaliar a modificação ambiental ocasionada pelos tratamentos, foram instalados em cada estufa e no ambiente externo um termohigrômetro data logger, que registrou a temperatura a cada 15 minutos do dia 18/05/2011 ao dia 14/06/2011. Posteriormente, foram calculados os graus-dia acumulados em cada ambiente. Para analisar as variações de crescimento das plantas nas diferentes condições de cultivo, foram realizadas cinco coletas ao longo do período experimental. Após a coleta das plantas, elas eram levadas ao laboratório para contagem do número de folhas maiores que 10cm de comprimento e para a determinação do índice de área foliar. Os resultados indicaram que o uso das telas alterou os padrões da temperatura, quando o uso das telas termorrefletora e preta reduziu a temperatura máxima em 4,7 e 3,6ºC, respectivamente, em relação ao ambiente controle, permitindo um menor acúmulo térmico no período experimental. Quanto às alterações morfológicas ocasionadas pelas modificações ambientais, foi possível constatar que o uso das telas termorrefletora e preta aumentou o número de folhas maiores que 10cm e o índice de área foliar. O uso de tela preta ou termorrefletora como subcobertura em estufas pode ser uma alternativa viável para incrementar a produção de alface em condições tropicais

This study aimed to evaluate the effect of different types of shading nets used as undercover of plastic in greenhouses of hydroponic cultivation of lettuce. The experiment was performed in greenhouses covered with plastic film of 150µm with three types of undercover nets: thermal reflector net, black, red and acontroltreatment - without the use of the undercover.To evaluate the environmental changes caused by treatments thermohygrometer data logger swere installed in each greenhouse as well asone in the external environment. The devices recorded the air temperature every 15 minutes from May 18th2011to June 14th2011. By using these data, it was possible to estimate the values of the growing degree-daysineach environment. To analyze the changes in plant growth and development caused by the treatments, five samples were taken along the experimental period. Inthe laboratorywe counted the number of leaves greater than 10cmof lengthand measured the leaf area index. The results indicated that the use of the nets changed the overall patterns of temperature and relative humidity. The use of thermal reflector net and black net reduced the maximum temperature at 4.7 and 3.6°C, respectively, compared to the controlalso allowing for lower growing degree-days at the end of the experimental period.As for the morphological changes caused by treatments, we observed that the use of thermal reflector netand black net increased the number of leaves greater than 10cm andalso the leaf area index.The use of black net or thermal reflector net as undercover in greenhouses can be a feasible alternative to increase the production of lettuce in tropical conditions

As mudanças globais englobam importantes alterações nos padrões normais de processos bioquímicos e biofísicos da Terra. Os reais efeitos e retroalimentações das mudanças globais sobre a vegetação ainda são incertos. Parte das incertezas pode ser atribuída à falta de atenção de cientistas e políticos para a vegetação, enquanto componente do sistema terrestre. Entretanto, algumas questões sobre as mudanças globais poderiam ser mais bem esclarecidas por abordagens mais voltadas à ecofisiologia vegetal. Nesse artigo, alguns pontos relacionados e esses problemas, como as limitações em se abordar a vegetação como um componente estático da atmosfera enquanto outros subsistemas do sistema terrestre são dinâmicos, são discutidos. Dentro dessa perspectiva, essa revisão traz uma reflexão inicial do papel da vegetação, em termos de estrutura e funcionamento, no contexto das mudanças globais. Para isso, foi feita uma revisão das terminologias relacionadas às mudanças globais e ao sistema terrestre, buscou-se ilustrar alguns dos principais temas de pesquisa da ecofisiologia vegetal no contexto das mudanças globais. Foram feitas considerações em relação ao tratamento de plantas como sistemas complexos, o que é importante para o estudo de aspectos relacionados à sensibilidade, estabilidade e vulnerabilidade a variações ambientais. Finalmente, são discutidas alternativas que podem ser utilizadas para incorporar aspectos do funcionamento da vegetação, de forma dinâmica, em estudos de mudanças globais, considerando o desafio de mudança de escalas. Espera-se que essa revisão possa auxiliar pesquisadores subsidiando suas estratégias de identificação e compreensão dos efeitos potenciais das mudanças globais sobre os processos mais vulneráveis da vegetação, da folha ao globo.

The global changes are marked by alteration on the normal patterns of important biochemical and biophysical processes of the Earth. However, the real effects as well as the feedbacks of the global changes over vegetation are still unclear. Part of this uncertainty can be attributed to the inattention of stakeholders and scientists towards vegetation and its complex interrelations with the environment, which drive plant physiological processes in different space-time scales. Notwithstanding, some key subjects of the global changes could be better elucidated with a more plant physiological ecology approach. We discuss some issues related to this topic, going through some limitations of approaching vegetation as a static component of the biosphere as the other sub-systems of the Earth-system change. With this perspective, this review is an initial reflection towards the assessment of the role and place of vegetation structure and function in the global changes context. We reviewed the Earth-system and global changes terminology; attempted to illustrate key plant physiological ecology researches themes in the global changes context; consider approaching plants as complex systems in order to adequately quantify systems characteristics as sensibility, homeostasis, and vulnerability. Moreover, we propose insights that would allow vegetation studies and scaling procedures in the context of the Earth-system. We hope this review will assist researchers on their strategy to identify, understand and anticipate the potential effects of global changes over the most vulnerable vegetation processes from the leaf to the global levels.

Diferenças na disponibilidade de radiação podem causar modificações na estrutura e função das folhas do cafeeiro, que podem responder de maneira diferencial à radiação por alterações morfológicas, anatômicas, de crescimento e na taxa fotossintética. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar características morfofisiológicas de cafeeiros (Coffea arabica L. cv. "Oeiras") sombreados por acácia (Acacia mangium Willd.) na época seca e chuvosa no sul de Minas Gerais. As maiores taxas fotossintéticas e maiores espessuras da epiderme adaxial foram observadas na estação chuvosa nas linhas de cafeeiros a pleno sol. O sombreamento influenciou em menor espessura das folhas e em espaços intercelulares maiores no tecido esponjoso. Foi também verificada mudança na forma dos cloroplastos, os quais apresentaram-se mais alongados em folhas de cafeeiros a pleno sol quando relacionados aos arborizados.

Light availability is one of the most important environmental factors affecting leaf structure and functions in coffee plants that can respond differently to radiation by changes in leaf anatomy, morphology, growth and photosynthetic rate. The objective of this research was evaluate some morphophysiological aspects in leaves of coffee (Coffea arabica L. cv. 'Oeiras') cropped under shelter trees in the south of Minas Gerais during the rainy and dry season. The shade caused lower leaves thickness and higher intercellular spaces in spongious tissue. There was also verified a change in chloroplast shape, which showed more elongated in coffee tree kept at full sunlight in relation to that ones maintained on shading.

O uso de sistemas de cultivo agrícola que favorecem a conservação dos recursos naturais e a diversidade de produção representa uma alternativa para produtores que visam menores custos em uma produção sustentável. Dentre esses sistemas de cultivo, destaca-se o sistema de consórcio entre cafeeiros e seringueiras, que tem sido estudado na região sul de Minas Gerais. Nesse contexto, avaliaram-se características de trocas gasosas, fluorescência da clorofila e relações hídricas de cafeeiros e seringueiras, em monocultivo e consórcio, na fase de implantação dos cultivos, com o objetivo de verificar o comportamento dessas espécies em diferentes sistemas de cultivo. Os resultados apontaram que um ambiente caracterizado por níveis de radiação e temperatura menores favorece as trocas gasosas do cafeeiro, enquanto maior disponibilidade hídrica e valores elevados de radiação são favoráveis ao desenvolvimento da seringueira quando em sistemas consorciados.

Crop systems that improve conservation of natural resources and diversity of production is a promising practice for farmers seeking low costs and a sustainable agriculture. The coffee - rubber tree intercropping has been studied in the south of Minas Gerais - Brazil. Within this context, the objective of this work was to evaluate the characteristics gas exchange, chlorophyll fluorescence and water relations of coffee and rubber tree in both intercropping and monocroping systems, in the early stage of the plantation establishment. The results showed that the reduction in radiation levels and temperature promote gas exchange increase in coffee, while higher photosynthetic radiation values and soil water availability are favorable to rubber tree in intercropping systems.

Cupania vernalis Camb. (Sapindaceae) é uma espécie freqüente em quase todas as formações florestais, principalmente em Cerrado e Mata de Galeria, abrangendo os Estados de Minas Gerais, Mato Grosso e São Paulo até o Rio Grande do Sul. Essa espécie se destaca, principalmente, pelo seu emprego em plantios mistos destinados à recuperação de áreas degradadas de preservação permanente, pelo fato de seus frutos serem muito apreciados e consumidos por pássaros e, ainda, na medicina popular contra asma e tosses convulsivas. O estudo da anatomia foliar é de grande importância para a compreensão da plasticidade adaptativa de uma espécie submetida a diferentes condições ambientais, por estar correlacionada com processos de trocas gasosas e assimilação de CO2 e outras características inerentes ao crescimento da planta. Neste trabalho, objetivou-se estudar o efeito de diferentes níveis de sombreamento (pleno sol, 30%, 50% e 70%) sobre a anatomia foliar e trocas gasosas de plantas jovens de Cupania vernalis Camb. Os resultados indicaram maior taxa fotossintética e, ainda, incrementos na condutância estomática, espessura do limbo, número de estômatos por área e espessura de parede celular em folhas de plantas crescidas sob pleno sol e 30% de sombreamento. Foram observadas correlações positivas entre características de trocas gasosas e anatomia foliar. Pelos resultados, pôde-se concluir que a espécie em estudo apresenta grande plasticidade anatômica em relação aos níveis de sombreamento testados, favorecendo, assim, um melhor desenvolvimento das mudas sob diferentes condições ambientais.

Cupania vernalis camb. (Sapindaceae) is a species commonly found in almost all forest associations, mainly in savanna-like vegetation (cerrado) and galeria woods, spreading over the states of Minas Gerais, Mato Grosso, São Paulo and reaching as far as Rio Grande do Sul. The species stands out mainly by its use in mixed planting to recover degraded areas of permanent preservation, for its fruits being much appreciated and consumed by birds and, still used in folk medicine against asthma and convulsive coughs. Leaf anatomy studies are highly important for the understanding of the adaptive plasticity of a species subjected to different environmental conditions, as it is correlated with processes such as gas exchanges and CO2 assimilation, as well as other processes inherent to plant growth. This work aimed to study the effect of different shading levels (full sunshine, 30%, 50% and 70%) on leaf anatomy and gas exchanges of Cupania vernalis camb plantlets. The results showed greater photosynthetic rate, increase in stomatal conductance, blade thickness, number of stomata per area and thickness of cell wall on leaves of plants grown under full sunshine and 30% shading. Positive correlations were observed between gas exchange traits and leaf anatomy. Based on these results, it is possible to conclude that the species used in this study has a great anatomic plasticity in relation to the tested shading levels, supporting in this way a better development of the seedlings under different environmental conditions.
